SWAT Team Member Job Information

SWAT Team Member Job InformationSWAT Team Member Job InformationThe name may change, but thejob- and the risk- of law enforcements Special Weapons And Tactics gruppes stays the same, and some would say theyre more necessary than ever. Within almost every mid to large-sized police department, investigative bureau or law enforcement agency, theres a group of men and women with elite training, equipment, and skills who get the calls no one else can handle. They go by different names TRT (Tactical Response Team), SRT (Situational Response Team), ERU (Emergency Response Unit), SOG (Special Operations Group), and a host of other acronyms. A good number of peoplewho want to become a police officer have dreams of someday making it on the SWAT team, but few reach that goal.SWAT officers are in many ways the best of the best, and the requirements to make- and maintain your spot on- the team are quite stringent. With all the mystique and mystery, though, aspiring cops and curious citizens alike may often wonder just what the SWAT team does and what does it take to get SWAT ready? What Does the SWAT Team Do? In most cases, SWAT team members are pooled from the ranks of patrol officers, detectives, and even supervisors and sometimes command staff. These officers typically serve as SWAT team members as an additional duty to their regular jobs, so that SWAT is not a full-time career in itself. When the hot call comes, though, these officers respond as quickly as possible, ready to take whatever action may be necessary. SWAT Teams are called to handle situations that regular patrol officers and detectives and investigators arent equipped or trained to handle.Typically, they respond to high-risk calls, such as serving arrest warrants on potentially violent suspects, executing search warrants insignificant drug and other contraband cases, hostage rescues, and bringing barricaded suspects into custody. Traditionally, SWAT teams served as the primary response to active shooter situations when these situations occurred, officers would create a perimeter and wait forthe SWAT team to make an entry. As those situations have proliferated in recent history, police are no longer waiting for SWAT and are instead developing training and tactics to eliminate the threat as quickly as possible to minimize casualties. SWAT teams still play a tremendous role in these and othersituations, though, and their jobs are immensely dangerous. Theyre called to respond to the most volatile situations, including riots, high profile rescues, and even dignitary protection. The one thing SWAT teams do more than anything else, though, is ?totrain. As you can imagine, the nature of the job of a SWAT team requires a high level of cohesion, expertise, and precision. For that reason, SWAT teams spend a great deal of time each month training and honing their skills so that theyre ready to respond and perform on a moments notice. What Is SWAT Team Training Like? Training for the SWAT t eam is intense, requiring a great deal of physical and mental exertion. Team members participate in intense physical exercise together, often in full duty gear to acclimate themselves to the real world conditions they may face. They also spend time training in special tactics, such as building entry and searches, doorway breaches, takedowns and search and rescues. Each member of the team has specific skills, duties, and responsibilities that they train on individually, as well as putting them together with the team. These may include jobs such as snipers, chemical agent specialists, less-lethal and nonlethal weapons likerubber bullets and bean bags, shotgunners, grenadiers, entry teams, and medics. What Kind of Equipment Do SWAT Teams Use? SWAT team members are among the best-equipped members of any police department that employs one. Equipment used by SWAT team members include flashbangs (a special grenade designed to disoriented and stun, rather than hurt or kill)tear gashigh- powered sniper rifles capable of ranges of a mile or more non-lethal ammunition sub-machine guns such as MP5s and UMPs ballistic shields special utility uniforms ballistic helmets breaching tools and even armored vehicles. What Does It Take to Make It on the Swat Team? First things first, you have to become a police officer. In most departments, once youve completed the police academy and the field training program, you will likely be eligible to try out for a specialty unit- like the SWAT team- after two years of road patrol experience. To make the team, you need to be in top physical condition. Youll be put through a battery of intense physical fitness assessments to make aya youre capable of facing the tremendous demands that will be placed on your body and your mind. Youll also need todemonstrate weapons proficiency and the ability to think quickly and act as a cohesive member of a highly specialized team. If you can cut it physically, youll undergo basic SWAT training that will push you to the limits and provide the skills you need to be a successful member of the team. Is the SWAT Team Right for Me? As weve discussed, SWAT training is intense, and the job is extremely mentally draining. Youre subject to call-outs at any hour, and therequirements are demanding for even the most physically fit. SWAT teams demand mental toughness, awillingnessto showtremendouscourage in the face ofextremedanger, and the ability to react to situations and take orders without questionimmediately. You need to be able to work very closely with others in a team setting, understand your role and execute it with precision, and above all, you must be ready and willing to make the ultimate sacrifice if it means saving the life of another.Serving on the SWAT team isnt for everyone its not even for every officer. But for those who can hack it, it can be an amazingly rewarding and exciting job.

A third of workers have left a job because of caregiving responsibilities

A third of workers have left a job because of caregiving responsibilitiesA third of workers have left a job because of caregiving responsibilitiesTheres a flashpoint in caregiving on the horizon that will affect both workers and employers, new research from Harvard Business School shows, as more Americans enter the age where they will be expected to care for their children and aging parents simultaneously, as well as an increase of single parents. The report focuses on the current reality and offers advice on how employers can help employees with their caregiving load by offering benefits that would specifically help them.More and more employees are going home to a second job. Three-quarters of US workers surveyed by Harvard Business School are caretakers for at least one dependent person be it a child, ill spouse, parent, or elderly relative. Rising costs in health care and professional caregiving mean they have to do it themselves, at least fruchtwein of the time. Naturally, this double shift competes with workers time and energy at work, and 80% say their caregiving affects their performance on the job.Sometimes, caregiving and working arent compatible at all. A third of caregivers have said theyve had to leave a job (voluntarily) because of their caregiving responsibilities. A higher number of men (38%) left their jobs over caregiving than women (27%).Employer-employee divideMost employers arent aware of the strain their employees are under, according to the report, and therefore workers dont get the support they need. 52% of employees do not keep track of their employees caregiving responsibilities. And only 24% of employers responded that caregiving might have an influence on workers performance.Employees, in turn, cost the company in terms of turnover, as well as productivity costs such as absenteeism and presenteeism. They are also reluctant to disclose they are caregivers, for fear it might have a negative effect on their opportunities at work. 59% ag reed with the statement Caregivers are perceived to be less committed to their careers than non-caregivers. Significantly more men (40%) than women (25%) agreed with that statement.Meanwhile, 63% of employers agreed with the statement My organization has an inclusive culture that treats caregivers fairly, showing just how far apart the two sides are on the issue. The most common factors that contributed to caregivers quitting were the unaffordability of paid help for caregiving (53%), being unable to find qualified paid caregiving help that welches trustworthy (44%), and the inability to meet work responsibilities because of increased caregiving responsibilities (40%).Here is an area where the employer could step in, according to the report, and view the issue of caregiving through the lens of talent management, rather than exclusively as another potential expensive benefit. After all, caregiving often isnt just a one-time event, like maternity leave. According to the AARP, 42% of car egiving provide support to at least one of their parents, 15% for a friend, neighbor, or another non-relative, 14% for a child with special needs, 12% for a spouse or partner, 7% for a parent-in-law, and 7% or a grandparent or grandparent-in-law.As the research shows, caregiving is a part of life. Taking a professional working holiday

Taking a professional working holiday Taking a professional working holidayPosted October 13, 2011, by Helen Isbister Many of the one million Australians living and working overseas are professionals who have packed up their extensive skills and taken them abroad gaining invaluable career and life experience. They can be found working in multinationals, aid agencies, government departments, NGOs, community organisations or private practices. The rest are likely to be fresh from school, fuelling their travels with whatever jobs pay the bills. They can be found on the Canadian ski fields, serving tapas in Ibiza, picking fruit in South America, teaching kids to horseride in American summer camps, au pairing in France, or photocopying and filing in London. Both types of working holidays have their perks, but the experiences they generate can be very different. If you are a vet, lawyer, journalist, engineer, doctor, nurse, teacher, manager, banker, accountant, public servant or other prof essional getting a gig might not be as easy as rocking up with a backpack and starting the same day. The first thing you should do is suss out whether your qualifications will be recognised in your chosen destination. Australian qualifications are generally very well regarded globally, but you may need to do a bridging course or apply for registration. Next its time to check out the visa situation. Australians under 30 are allowed to automatically apply for a working visa in lots of countries, but dont despair if that age has come and gone. You can be sponsored by a company to work for them regardless of your age if they are keen to have you on staff. Dont wait until you rock up in Botswana with your prestigious law degree under your arm before realising no one can understand a word you are saying and you are virtually unemployable. Do your research on the political, security, cultural and economic conditions of your target country. That said, if you work for a multinational, chance s are you will probably be able to use English regardless of where you are in the world. Also dont be afraid to think outside the square London may be the favourite working-holiday destination for obvious reasons, but plenty of amazing opportunities exist in less predictable destinations. If you work for a multinational company in Australia, then applying for a transfer to one of their other offices can be a fabulous career move. You will be gaining experience in your field, receive transport and housing assistance, and have a job to come home to at the end of your international stint. Some government departments also have solid opportunities for international work. The Department of Foreign Affairs offers overseas employment in Australias international posts within embassies, consulates and high commissions. Federal and state bodies such as tourism and trade, security, policing and armed forces also provide good opportunities to work and play overseas. Aid work is a great way to b innensee the world while also making a difference. There are lots of different roles in almost any country you can think of. Engineers, agronomists, environmentalists, logisticians, linguists, and medical professionals are always in high demand because of their highly technical knowledge, but its also very competitive so be ready to dazzle with your qualifications and experience. You might choose to apply for many international jobs before you leave Australia, making the transition a lot smoother. This also may be a necessity if you are unable to apply for a working visa and need to be sponsored before leaving. However, if you want to work in a smaller organisation or private practice it might be easier to begin the job hunt once you have arrived. Adopt the same job-hunting strategy as you would back home sign up to employment agencies and scour newspapers and erreichbar jobsites. Also be sure that you have budgeted enough to be able to eat and house yourself until you find a job. When it comes to taking your profession global, the world is your oyster. Self-talk How I overcame negative self-talk to be more confident

Self-talk How I overcame negative self-talk to be mora confidentSelf-talk How I overcame negative self-talk to be more confidentSelf-talk, the words we mutter in ur minds, can have a strong influence over our performance.Ive found that the right attitude, coupled with the right internal dialogue, can make things happen in life. The wrong attitude, however, combined with self-doubting dialogue, can stop you in your tracks and make you want to run home and hide your head.I can recall one professional experience when this was really clear to me.During a board meeting for a seestreitmacht Corps nonprofit, the chairman asked us, What are we elend doing to help fund our organizations mission? Can anyone think of anything that we havent considered?Well, I had an idea. Scanning the boardroom, it was clear to me that our board composition could be more diverse. I raised my hand and said to the chairman, I think one of our challenges is the lack of diversity represented on our board. Theres mo re than enough data to support that diverse boards deliver stronger results - financial and otherwise. This is true in the corporate world, and I cant imagine why it would be different in the nonprofit world. After sharing some facts and figures to support my perspective, I finished up and then sat up in my seat a little bit straighter, proud that Id made my case so strongly. Then I waited for a reply. And waited . . . and waited. That was when my confident pride faded to insecurity. Oh dear God, I thought. What have I done? You could hear crickets. Rarely did this board not have an opinion. I felt insecure over having raised the issue that silenced the room. I then felt embarrassed, like I had either offended someone or that maybe I had tarnished the reputation I had been carefully building. When the meeting adjourned, I didnt engage in polite chitchat with the other members but headed straight to the door, caught a cab, and hightailed it to the airport so I could go home and be alone with my self-destructive insecure thoughts. While boarding the plane, I passed our boards general counsel, a very famous attorney - John Dowd, who authored the Dowd Report that led to the suspension of Pete Rose from baseball for life.He asked me to sit next to him, and while I didnt want to, fearing a confrontation, I sat down out of respect. And immediately he jumped into the conversation with, Im glad you brought that point up about diversity. Youre right. He then shared that he was going to talk with the CEO about the diversity of our board, because we might be missing out on some of its key benefits. In those moments, Johns perspective shed some critical light on my self-talk. He made me realize how quickly Id taken the others silence to mean that they were judging me when maybe they were just thinking and reflecting about something theyd never thought about before.I was amazed by how automatically Id conjured the worst-case scenario without even considering a best-case scenario. I realized that I needed to have more confidence in myself and write a new inner dialogue for when Im feeling stressed or pressured, because the current one wasnt helping.Had I not had this random encounter with John, I would have drowned myself in my own miserable self-talk for weeks.John and I spent the next 30to 40minutes talking about our life experiences, diversity, families, and the Marine Corps. He ended up introducing me to General Joseph Dunford then Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, the second-highest-ranking Marine in the organization. After an initial meeting, General Dunford asked for my help in arranging a private luncheon with other Marines and the Commandant of the Marine Corps, whos the CEO-equivalent in the organization, and his executive team. It was a lively, candid, and memorable discussion. My relationship with General Dunford continued as he became chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, with whom Ive now shared my thoughts, ideas, and research on diver sity to help promote a military in which everyone - from recruit to active-duty tafelgeschirr member to Veteran- recognizes the benefits that diversity can bring to an organization. When I look back on the string of events that allowed me to provide my perspectives on diversity to the highest levels of the military, theres no doubt that confidence has been a part of every step. This Spark quality, which I define in my recent bookSpark,as your belief in your abilities and the feeling that you can rise to the occasion when the pressure is on, inspired me to speak my mind and share my point of view, even though I had mistakenly told myself that it had been received poorly. In fact, speaking up opened the door to greater opportunities. What has sustained me as a Spark is the ability to manage my confidence by substituting positive self-appraisals for those harmful, negative ones. Im not perfect at this - Im still a work in progress - but I lean on this story about John Dowd and General Dunford for confidence boosting all the time.Angie Morgan is a former Captain in the U.S., Marine Corps, co-creator of Lead Star, and co-author of Leading from the Front and SPARK How to Lead Yourself and Others to Greater Success(Houghton Mifflin Harcourt January 2017).

Youre results focused.Youre also energetic, confident and professional - and if you put those words in your resume, youve just caused a hiring professionals eyes to glaze over. Why is such language undesirable for resumes ? First, its subjective. Its the resume subjects own interpretation of herself, and its unacceptably vague.Words like successfully are pretty lame and overused. Such wording doesnt tell the reader what he wants to know, said Tina Brasher, a certified professional resume writer who works with Ladders and recently rewrote the resume of a 46-year-old technology executive who used this type of vague, subjective language on his resume before Brasher reworked the document.Resume readers want to know specifics relating to the bo ttom line, Brasher said. What they want to get out of a resume is 1) How can you make the company money ? and 2) How can you save the company money? she said. Theyre looking for a resume not only for that but, Are you qualified for the job opening I posted? And, Whats your skill set? How did you make a positive difference in the company you just left? How are you different and more valuable as an employee from John Smith whose resume I just read or John Doe whose resume Im about to read? Brasher offers the following list of what she calls fluffy language phrases and words that resume readers have seen 10 million times and that will lose their attention.Highly qualifiedResults focusedEffectual leaderHas talent forEnergeticConfidentProfessionalSuccessfullyOther words to avoid include competent, and its a good idea to stay away from its synonyms able, capable, fit, good, qualified or suitable, Brasher said. The following resume example is from the summary paragraph of the technology exe cutives original resume the weak, subjective words are rendered in italic and shown in the context of how these words are typically used by far too many people who craft their own resumesHighly qualified Executive Manager offering more than 22 years of software development, consulting services business, product abverkauf and tech support experiences. While words such as excellent and seasoned are subjective, note that they are also backed up by specific facts (noted in bold underline) that will get noticed by a hiring professionalCombine astute strategic, business, and project management skills with an 11-year t rack record of business consultancy and analysis that enables revenue and profit growth. 4 Secrets to a Successful Job Share

4 Secrets to a Successful Job Share 4 Secrets to a Successful Job Share Job sharing can be a terrific solution for working moms or dads who want to pursue a high-powered career. If you want to succeed at this and find work/life balance here are some secrets you need to know. Job Sharing Is Like a Marriage Like a happy marriage, effective job sharing requires trust, flexibility, and compatibility between partners. The big secret behind a successful  job-share situation is finding the right fit for employees. This is why if you are going to share your job you take your time finding the right teammate. Your job-share partner should have a similar professional style, work ethic, career goals and values as you. You dont want to come in for your half of the week and have to re-do all the work your teammates work because its not up to snuff. Most importantly, you should trust that any issues that arise when you are out of the office will be handled in a professional and thorough manner. You must be confident that your job will be performed equally well whether its your day or theirs. It Relies on Open Communication A job share should function as smoothly as if only one person filled the position. You and your partner must communicate as seamlessly as if you shared a brain. That means setting up systems that make it quick and easy  for you to hand off projects to each other. The other person should be able to easily find the answer to questions and understand the work you completed. For instance, at the end of your work shift, leave a memo about the work you completed. You could agree on consistent methods for naming and organizing both computer files and paper records. To help control your shared inbox, develop a way to sort and store e-mail that is efficient and simple. Its critical to clearly communicate as a united front with other members of your work team. For instance, a job-share team might use a shared email account, but the person writing a given email signs their name. Some job-share teams work so well together that they even apply for promotions or new jobs as a team. You could either develop a joint resume or have one person apply for the position and mention your interest in job sharing during the interview process. Set a Consistent Schedule It may be tempting to split a job share position exactly in half, with each person covering 20 hours a week. That may work for service positions, where you complete all your tasks during the allotted hours and few projects carry over. For most jobs, its best for a job-share team to overlap at least once every week. That lets you communicate in person about ongoing projects, meetings, and goals. Some teams have each job-share partner work three days a week, meaning two days by themselves and one shared day (often Wednesday). By working side by side at least once a week, you strengthen the trust and team orientation that will ensure the success of your partnership. Agree in advance which person is on call for after-hours emergencies on any given day. You might want to split each week, alternate weeks or even alternate months, depending on what works best for your other responsibilities. Be Flexible One of the key benefits of job sharing is your ability to cover for your partner when they are on vacation or out sick or with a sick child. So its important to be flexible in scheduling. Each member of the job-share team should have flexible childcare or backup plans, such as a grandparent or other family member, in case the other partner has a personal emergency on the day when they are scheduled to work.? You also should communicate well in advance of any major life changes, such as possible maternity leave, applying for a promotion or potential relocation due to a spouses career change. The last thing you want is to blindside the person whos made it possible for you to enjoy a challenging, gratifying career while also having time for your family.

How your credit card data gets shared with cyber criminals when you book a hotel

How your credit card data gets shared with cyber criminals when you book a hotel How your credit card data gets shared with cyber criminals when you book a hotel If you have a business trip coming up, you might want to employ extra caution. According to research recently conducted by Symantec Corp, two out of three hotels or 67%, mistakenly leak personal information and booking details to advertisers and analytics companies. This compromised  data is typically comprised of email addresses, last four digits of credit card, card type, and expiration date, mobile phone number, your full name, and even passport numbers.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersรข€™ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Unfortunately, it happens more often than you think  The studyรข€™s lead researcher, Candid Wueest, works for Symantecรข€™s Security Technology and Response division.  In his detailed analysis, he explained that the frequency of these errors of confidentiality is higher than many are aware of, and the consequences can end up being catastrophic if intimate details get into the hands of cyberc riminals.  Wueest writes, รข€œWhile itรข€™s no secret that advertisers are tracking usersรข€™ browsing habits, in this case, the information shared could allow these third-party services to log into a reservation, view personal details and even cancel the booking altogether.รข€The study examined over 1,500 hotel websites in 54 different countries, from the two-star range to the five-star range, and included chains and independent properties.  Wueest surmises that our private information is commonly shared when hotels send emails to confirm bookings. These emails contain direct links to our booking information, which is then made inadvertently available to over thirty different service providers.  Fifty-seven percent of the sites tested by Wueest observed a policy of sending confirmation emails with a direct link to the booking info of recent customers. The report states: รข€œSince the email requires a static link, HTTP POST web requests are not really an option, meaning the booking re ference code and the email are passed as arguments in the URL itself. On its own, this would not be an issue. However, many sites directly load additional content on the same website, such as advertisements.รข€The research revealed that an alarming 176 requests are granted per booking. Additionally, in most instances, booking data remains  visible, even in instances when customers cancel their reservations. You might also enjoyรข€¦ New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklinรข€™s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Study Bosses who overshare are seen as less powerful

Study Bosses who overshare are seen as less powerful Study Bosses who overshare are seen as less powerful How much do our coworkers need to know about our personal lives? Recent research shows that it may depend on oneรข€™s age and rank.According to a LinkedIn and CensusWide survey, your answer differs partly depending on your age. The survey found that the majority of millennial employees are willing to divulge intimate details that would be considered taboos in previous generations, such as how much they make and marital problems and family problems theyรข€™re experiencing. Advocates of honesty and transparency say this can be a good thing.Social scientist Dr. Brenรƒ© Brown, for example, has given a TEDx talk on รข€œThe Power of Vulnerabilityรข€ and the รข€œcourage to be imperfectรข€ that has reached millions of people. Brown argues that acts of vulnerability can help us overcome failures by helping us grow comfortable with discomfort. She has science on her side. Research has proven that self-disclosures can benefit our personal relationships by making us seem more likable to our friends a nd intimate partners. But the power of vulnerability is situational. Over-sharers at work beware: A  new study in the Journal of Organizational Behavior and Human Decisions Processes found that disclosing personal information to our coworkers can backfire and make us seem less powerful and influential in their eyes.Bosses are a special caseIn three lab experiments, researchers got their student participants to believe they were working with task partners who were perceived to be going to higher-status schools than they were. During a get-to-know-you exercise, students in the manipulated group had high-status partners who disclosed a potential weakness in their chats. The researchers defined potential weaknesses broadly as what had รข€œthe potential to trigger weakness attributions or assumptions about the discloser.รข€ Some of the potential weaknesses participants heard were doctor visits, a history of past poor performance, and seeing therapists for their mental health. The researcher s found that self-disclosures like this signal vulnerability. When the students thought they were hearing vulnerability from someone they thought was a peer, they did not rate that personรข€™s status lower. But when the students thought they were hearing a weakness from someone from a higher status, that discovery resulted in รข€œdiminished perceived status and consequently less influence, greater perceived conflict, less liking, and less desire for a future relationship.รข€The role of hierarchies at workSo why can we support vulnerability in our peers and friends, but not in our high-status leaders and bosses? The researchers theorize that itรข€™s because our workplaces operate under rigid hierarchies with clearly delineated roles. We set higher expectations of behaviors in people ranked above us, and when bosses disclose vulnerability that upsets the status order. We may start to doubt their ability to lead us.รข€œOnce a status order has been established, group members are expected to engage in behaviors that support and justify their status position in the group (i.e., status markers) because these behaviors reaffirm the legitimacy of the status order,รข€ the study says. รข€œA high-status individual who displays vulnerability รข€" a direct contrast to the confidence and assertiveness expected of them รข€" behaves in a way that violates the expectations of their status position and does so at the risk of having their status รข€˜taken away.'รข€What you should doIf you want to share personal news with a peer at work, go ahead and spill. Bonding over shared miseries and triumphs can bring you closer together to the coworkers coming up alongside you.But if youรข€™re a manager, think twice before disclosing your shortcomings to the coworkers you lead. To be the most effective leader to your team, there are some parts of your life that may be better off staying private.

Everything You Need to Know About CPA Jobs

Everything You Need to Know About CPA Jobs Everything You Need to Know About CPA Jobs We write a lot about CPA jobs, CPA salaries, CPA skills, CPA specializations and the CPA exam here, but in honor of the centennial of the Uniform CPA Examination, we've put together a roundup of all things certified public accountant for those of you interested in a range of topics related to CPA jobs. From startup ventures to nonprofits to multinational corporations, organizations depend on the skills of people who undergo strict licensing and educational requirements to earn their CPAs. As the business environment grows in complexity, so does the demand for these trusted advisers and their trusted credentials. Today's CPAs make strategic business decisions and and have more career options than ever before. In this article, we describe the steps to becoming a CPA, from taking the tests to choosing a specialty to moving into management, with links to posts about the CPA that appear on this blog. Consider this your definitive guide to discover everything you need to know about CPA jobs, and as time goes on, we'll keep adding to it. First steps to becoming a CPA Most accountants earn a college degree, but for those who plan to pursue CPA jobs, at least a bachelorรข€™s degree is required, typically in accounting, finance or business. But it doesnรข€™t have to stop there. Many CPAs earn a masterรข€™s in business administration or pursue an accelerated five-year accounting program. Every state is different, but most require 150 semester hours of instruction, which is 30 hours beyond a typical four-year bachelorรข€™s degree. Some states also stipulate advanced coursework in subjects such as financial reporting, taxes, auditing and other non-accounting business areas. Regulations vary by state, so be sure to check the requirements for your jurisdiction. Before you jump on the career path to CPA jobs, read these blog posts: Private vs. Public: Choose Your Accounting Career Path - The demand is great for both types of accounting, with salaries on the rise. But as youรข€™ll read in this post, there are differences, from the daily routine to job titles to salaries. CPA or CMA? Which Finance Certifications Are Right for You? - Itรข€™s not a matter of which certification is better, but which one is better for you. Discover the differences in requirements, exams, perks and salaries in this side-by-side รข€œCPA or CMAรข€ summary. 3 E's to Excellence on the Career Path to CPA - Before you add those three letters to your name, learn about the three Eรข€™s that will guide you to a career as a CPA: Education, Exam, Experience. The rigors of the CPA exam Aside from education, most states require CPA candidates to work for 1,800 hours under the supervision of a licensed CPA, which they can do before, during or after the exam process. CPA candidates also typically enroll in test preparation courses to get ready for the four parts of the Uniform CPA Examination: Audit and Attestation; Financial Accounting and Reporting; Regulation; and Business Environment and Concepts. Changes in the now-16-hour exam that launches in April 2017 will reflect a shift from memorization to an emphasis on critical thinking and analysis, in an effort to better reflect the demands faced by todayรข€™s new CPAs. The CPA exam is offered during the first two months of every quarter, over the course of several days. Candidates take the sections in any order they choose, but once they have passed one part, they must successfully complete the other three within 18 months. The cost of the test plus application fees typically runs around $1,000 but varies from state to state. Many state boards of accountancy require that CPAs maintain and improve their skills through continuing professional education (CPE) courses. The American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), which develops and scores the CPA exam, requires an annual renewal fee and every-three-year recertification. CPA jobs and specializations What do CPAs do? On the most basic level, they keep and inspect financial accounts for companies, governmental entities and clients. The CPA license isnรข€™t required for corporate or private accountants, but it is for public accountants, who work for companies that provide accounting services to others. The work of a public accountant covers a range positions, and many professionals choose specializations, such as these CPA jobs: Financial analysis - ?The job of a financial analyst is to support business growth by analyzing financial data, preparing reports to illustrate technical information, interpreting data affecting investment programs and helping management make informed decisions. Internal auditing - ?Internal auditors evaluate and contribute to their companyรข€™s operations by examining risk management issues, financial data and operations, and control processes. Information technology auditing - Combining the IT and accounting disciplines, IT auditors examine the technological infrastructure of companies, testing systems to ensure security, accuracy and compliance with regulations. Tax accounting - ?Duties of a tax accountant range from maintaining tax records and completing tax returns to guiding companies in tax strategies, compliance, and tax laws and regulations. Managerial accounting - Accounting managers prepare budgets and financial documents, evaluate and refine accounting procedures, and consult with management teams to help them make good business decisions Belicia Cespedes Real stories about the CPA Want some real examples from real people about their CPA jobs and journeys? We have a few to share from our blog. Belicia Cespedes Tells Her Story: How I Became the Youngest CPA at 17 - Belicia writes about how she started high school at 10 and college at 13, and was rewarded with trips to the Cheesecake Factory every time she sat for a section of the CPA exam. She tells an inspiring story. How to Become a CPA in 9 Months: Live Under a Rock Like I Did - Charlene Rhinehart shares her heartfelt and advice-filled story of how she used her grit and tenacity (and brains) to study for the CPA exam and pass the tests within nine months. 5 Ways to Fail at the CPA Exam (Like I Did) - Ethan, a senior associate in the audit and assurance department of a regional public accounting firm, offers his candid warning about how NOT to approach the CPA exam, the way he did. Heรข€™s inspiring, too, in a different sort of way from Belicia and Charlene. The Top 7 CPA Skills - and How to Get Them - A study asked 450 staff-level finance and accounting professionals what they would like to add to their compilation of CPA skills in the next year, and this post discusses their top seven responses. CPA salary information Of course, weรข€™d be leaving out a big part of the CPA jobs story if we didnรข€™t tell you about salaries. Not only is the CPA an in-demand credential, but it can put you a the higher end of the compensation table. Update: The 2019 Robert Half Salary Guide for Accounting and Finance Professionals is out, along with starting salary ranges for more than 190 positions, regional variances that can help you adjust salaries to your local market, and new data on benefits, incentives and perks. Based on actual placements in our office, the starting salary for a senior manager/director in audit/assurance services is $131,250 at the midpoint, and $134,000 for a senior manager/director in tax services. Bonuses and benefits are not included in those numbers. Job outlook for CPAs Thereรข€™s more good news with regard to CPA jobs. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that employment of accountants and auditors will grow 11 percent from 2014 to 2020. So far, a short supply of skilled talent has lowered unemployment rates for accounting and finance roles below the overall national rate. As a result, CPA hiring has taken on a greater sense of urgency, with public accounting firms recruiting at all levels. Much of the activity is focused on adding professionals in audit and tax roles, but firms are also looking for expertise in risk, compliance, and mergers and acquisitions. As CPAs get experience under their belts - in public accounting, financial services and corporate accounting - many naturally want to take on more responsibilities and move up the career ladders. Find out more about those options by reading 8 Ways CPAs Can Make Their Way to Management Positions. Of course, once you pass the CPA exam, you have to keep up your professional education. Why your 2018 taxes are different if you work from home

Why your 2018 taxes are different if you work from home Why your 2018 taxes are different if you work from home Deciding to work from home is a significant financial decision. Those who work from home cut back on commuter costs, but building a home office comes with a solid price tag. When tax season rolls around, thereรข€™s a whole other list of considerations, and the 2018 tax season hit some people with a major adjustment. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 changed how some employees who work from home file taxes for tax years 2018 through 2025.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersรข€™ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The Home office deductionWhile salaried employees were once able to file unreimbursed employee expenses as a deductible, that perk only existed for tax years prior to 2018, according to Brian Ashcraft, the director of customer experience at Liberty Tax.Telecommuters that dedicated an area of space in their homes exclusively for work purposes, and worked from home for the convenience of their employer, were previ ously able to deduct a portion of home-related expenses. Some of these expenses included mortgage interest, property taxes, homeowners insurance, and utilities. Employees could also claim work-related trips, professional dues, and equipment used for work.Tax reforms eliminated the ability to claim miscellaneous itemized deductions, which took away any area for employees to claim home office expenses. Now those expenses fall completely on the employee unless the employer agrees to fund them. What this means for the 2018 tax year if you work from homeThe inability to claim these expenses means that refunds for the 2018 tax year could be smaller, or could even become รข€œbalances dueรข€ for employees with unreimbursed business expenses,  according to Nathan Rigney, the Lead Tax Research Analyst at the Tax Institute at  HR Block.  In addition, those who deducted unreimbursed business expenses for 2017 are actually at risk of owing this tax season. These  unreimbursed business expenses  ca n be especially considered for certain workers, such as truckers or those who travel for work.รข€œEmployees who are no longer able to take the home office deduction, and didnรข€™t like what happened with their refund this year, can make sure it doesnรข€™t happen again next year by updating withholding with their employer,รข€ Rigney said.Who can still claim unreimbursed employee expenses? The good news is that those self-employed workers, freelancers, and independent contractors can still claim these deductions. Writing for Business - Management and Leadership

Writing for Business - Management and Leadership Writing for Business - Management and Leadership The purpose of business writing is to convey information to someone else or to request information from them. To be effective writing for business, you must be complete, concise, and accurate. Your text should be written in such a way that the reader will be able to easily understand what you are telling or asking them. A lot of writing for business is sloppy, poorly written, disorganized, littered with jargon, and incomplete. Often it is either too long or too short. All these attributes contribute to ineffective business writing. Whether you are writing a sales proposal, an email to your boss, or an instruction manual for a software package, there are certain steps you must follow to be effective.  Follow these five steps: Organize your materialConsider your audienceWrite down your thoughtsProofread your materialEdit your material Organization is Key If you dont organize your material it wont flow well and it wont make sense. Writing can simple or complicated. When writing an email announcing a staff meeting, this is as simple as collecting your thoughts. On the other hand, youll probably need to develop a complex outline in advance of the finished material if youre writing up the results of a ground-breaking pharmaceutical trial. Whatever the task, without an appropriate level of organization (even organizing your thoughts), you may not include everything you need to or fail to give prominence to the most important topics. Omissions or an incorrect focus will make your business writing less clear. Know Your Audience Before you start to write, think about your intended audience. For example, a presentation about your companys new 401(k) program may have the same outline when given to your CFO as well as employees, but the level of details you include will vary. You also need to consider tone. A quick email to your team, reminding them of the annual company picknick, wont have the same tone as your missive regarding your companys annual report. Also, remember that you will communicate more effectively to your audience if you focus on what you want them to hear rather than on what you are going to say. A Word About Good Writing Good writers have different styles of writing. Some prefer to write everything out and then go back and edit. Others prefer to edit as they go along. Sometimes their preferred style varies depending on what they are writing. As you write (or when you edit) be aware of length. You should use enough words to make your meaning clear, but dont use unnecessary words just to make it flowery. Business writing needs to be clear and concise, not verbose and flowery. Remember, no one in business has time to read any more than necessary. On the other hand, dont make your piece too short. You must write enough so that your meaning is clear and wont be misunderstood. Imagine if a piece of equipment in a warehouse was labeled used but good. It would be unclear if that meant the piece of equipment had been used a lot, or that the piece of equipment was no longer new but still functional. A few additional words would have made the meaning clear. Also, avoid using jargon or abbreviations because  they can mean different things to different readers. Regardless of your writing  style, all writers need to proofread and edit all written material, even emails. Proofread and Edit Regardless of your writing  style, all writers need to proofread and edit all written material, even emails. After youre done writing, proofread your work. You may then need to edit it. Proofreading is re-reading what you wrote to make sure all the words in your head made it correctly onto the paper. Because our brains work faster than our fingers, you may omit words, leave off an ending, or use the wrong homonym (e.g., there instead of their). Proofreading catches these errors. Obviously, proofreading a one-line email is easy and just glancing over it as you type may be enough. However, if you are writing an instruction manual, your proofreading will be more complicated and take longer. After you have proofread your material, its time to edit. Sometimes proofreading and editing can be done simultaneously, but it is more effective when they are done sequentially. The reason you edit is to fix or change what you wrote in order to make the material sound (and read) better. When writing for business, this means fixing the errors and making the text as clear and concise as possible. You're Not Writing a Novel When youre writing for business youre not writing the next great American novel. Your writing should be as descriptive as necessary, but you dont need to paint vivid word pictures using lots of big words and figures of speech. If you mean glass houses, dont write vitreous domiciles, write glass houses.
