Meet Heimir Hallgrimsson, Coach Who Got Iceland to World Cup
Meet Heimir Hallgrimsson, Coach Who Got Iceland to World Cup Icelandâs national soccer team, the beloved underdogs of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, has an eclectic coach known for his widespread fanbase â" and teeth cleaning. Heimir HallgrÃmsson has led Icelandâs national soccer team to its first-ever World Cup this year. And when heâs not coaching, HallgrÃmsson works part time as as a dentist and sometimes dresses up as an Icelandic troll during Christmastime in his hometown. (He couldnât wear the costume for the mythological creature Gryla this past year, however, as he was out of the country with his team, according to the New York Times.) HallgrÃmsson, 51, helped push Iceland through an exciting 2016 European Championship appearance â" another first for the nordic country. Iceland stunned Argentina, 2014âs runner-up, with a 1-1 tie in its 2018 World Cup debut. Hereâs what to know about HallgrÃmsson ahead of Icelandâs second World Cup match on Friday â" this time against Nigeria. Depending on how that match goes, Iceland could set itself up for a possible shot at advancing to the elimination rounds, thanks in part to Argentinaâs disastrous loss to Croatia earlier this week. (The United States didnât qualify for the worldâs most-watched sporting event for the first time in three decades.) HallgrÃmsson became the teamâs only coach after Icelandâs successful run at the European Championship 2016. Before then, HallgrÃmsson was co-coach of the team alongside Lars Lagerbäck, who now coaches Norwegianâs national team. He also coached both menâs and womenâs youth teams throughout his career. HallgrÃmsson is a dentist and still practices part-time in Vestmannaeyjar, an archipelago off the coast of Iceland and his hometown. One benefit of having two gigs? Job security, he told TIME in an interview earlier this year. âYou know the world of football coaches, where you wake up tomorrow and donât have a job?â HallgrÃmsson said. âDonât apply to me.â In school, HallgrÃmsson was originally interested in studying computer science and becoming a software engineer, according to the New York Times. But his plans changed when he decided to follow his friend into dentistry. âItâs a good way to relax,â he told the Times. âSome coaches play golf, shoot reindeer, whatever â" everybody has something. But I really enjoy going back home to my clients.â HallgrÃmsson reveals his starting line-up at a pub before each game Iceland co-coach Heimir Hallgrimsson salutes supporters at the end of the match France won 5-2. Now, at Ãlver, a pub near Laugardalsvöllur national stadium in Iceland, HallgrÃmsson shows fans motivational videos and gives them details about his starting lineup and strategy against that dayâs opponent, according to Sports Illustrated. âFor seven years Iâve done it now, and nothingâ"I repeat, nothingâ"has leaked on social media, even though the information they are getting is quite huge and is probably sellable,â HallgrÃmsson told Sports Illustrated. âIt wouldnât be possible unless itâs a community that trusts each other like here.â He did, however, keep his strategy mum when the team faced Argentina on the 2018 World Cup stage earlier this month.
